Qualities to Look For in a Remodeling Contractor

September 9th, 2011

How do you know who you can trust with your remodeling project? If, like most people, you don’t take on such a project very often, it’s easy to be intimidated by the contractor selection process. Here are a few common sense questions to think about before engaging any remodeling contractor:

  • Are they experienced in the type of work I need them to perform?

No two remodeling projects are alike, so make sure that your remodeling contractor knows all the ins and outs of the task at hand. Are they properly insured? Do they need permits for the job, and if so, do they know where to obtain them? Have they attended special training in the type of project you’re asking them to do? Are they certified by local, state and national organizations in their field of expertise?

  • Who can I call when I have questions or concerns?

A good remodeling contractor understands that clients expect accountability in ensuring that the job is completed to the client’s satisfaction. Insist on a written estimate with a defined payment schedule, outlining exactly where your money is going, especially if payment is required up-front. Make sure to get all necessary contact information from at least one person on the remodeling team who is informed about the state of the project and can keep you updated at all times, especially in the event of an emergency.

  • What is their reputation in the community?

A smile and a handshake can go a long way, but they can sometimes be deceiving as well. Make sure to ask for references of customers who have been satisfied with projects similar to yours. Ask if the remodeling contractor has ever received any awards or recognition from professional organizations, and then check the credentials of those organizations. Odds are, if your contractor has the respect of other remodeling professionals, you can put your trust in them as well.
