Insist on a written estimate with a defined payment schedule, outlining exactly where your money is going, especially if payment is required up-front. Make sure to get all necessary contact information from at least one person on the remodeling team who is informed about the state of the project and can keep you updated at all times, especially in the event of an emergency.
- What is their reputation in the community?
A smile and a handshake can go a long way, but they can sometimes be deceiving as well. Make sure to ask for references of customers who have been satisfied with projects similar to yours. Ask if the remodeling contractor has ever received any awards or recognition from professional organizations, and then check the credentials of those organizations. Odds are, if your contractor has the respect of other remodeling professionals, you can put your trust in them as well.
